The year 2014 marks the 17th anniversary of one of the most successful programs for improving children's health care in the United States, which is the CHIP program. It is a marvel. Eight million American children and families look to CHIP for comprehensive and affordable health care coverage. CHIP's success has played an essential role in cutting the number of uninsured children in half over the last 14 years, from about 14 percent to about 7 percent. CHIP is currently at a crossroads. Funding for CHIP must be reauthorized, otherwise the program as we know it will come to an end, and as many as 2 million children could lose their coverage. This would threaten their health and their well-being, not to mention the significant gains that we have made over the past 17 years to reduce the number of uninsured children in this country.
